Why yoga for kids?

"When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others." ~ Peace Pilgrim

Yoga for children is quite different than yoga for adults. However, they need it for many of the same reasons. Kids today have busy lives and have a lot of demands on their attention and energies. The world today is one full of opportunities for overstimulation. Yoga is a chance to develop skills that will be physically and mentally beneficial.

A few of the skills your child could develop in yoga:

  • Development of awareness of their bodies
  • Development of coordination
  • Stress Management through breathing, awareness, meditation, and healthy movement
  • Strengthening of concentration skills
  • Community in a healthy non competitive group
  • Increase in self confidence
  • Cultivation of positive self image

Most importantly, kids yoga is joyful and playful! Forget any mental picture of rows of perfect, quiet, little yogis. Kids yoga is playful. There is a lot of movement. It may appear chaotic at times. It may be noisy. And that is all okay!

As the name Storybook Yoga implies we will be weaving together words and movement. We will incorporate movement and breath exercises to make stories come alive. We will use the stories to introduce and reinforce our themes. Using movement, breath, literature, art, nutrition, games, and music we will create an experience that appeals to all the senses and learning styles.

Hello, I'm Deetz

I'm a certified kids yoga instructor.

I wish you peace, the kind that lights you up from the inside out.

Deetz, a native of Coastal North Carolina, moved to Charleston in 1999. Her educational career has taken her from Appalachian State and the mountains of North Carolina to College of Charleston where she earned her Masters of Teaching: Early Childhood Education. She has taught 4 year old child development, Kindergarten, and 3 year old preschool classes. Deetz completed her 50 hour Kids Yoga Instructor Training (R- KHYI) through Holy Yoga. She is a contributing faculty member to Kids Yoga Academy, an online resource for kids yoga teachers.

I discovered children's yoga while teaching kindergarten. A parent came in and led a Cat in the Hat yoga practice during Dr. Seuss Week. I was delighted!

Deetz currently lives on Daniel Island with her adventure loving husband and three incredible children.
